Messy Smoky Eye Look

I actually wore this makeup look several weeks ago for a dinner party but forgot to take a picture at the time. I decided to repeat it for a face of the day post as I was pleased with the result and it was quite quick and easy to apply. I took my inspiration from this Lisa Eldridge tutorial but instead of a cream eyeshadow, I used my Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill eyeshadow in #4 which is a cream/powder hybrid.

When I did this look originally, I used Illamasqua Skin Base foundation. I only have a small sample tube of the Illamasqua Skin Base and I wasn't particularly taken with the formula when I first tried it. However, it's the only full coverage foundation that I own so I use it whenever I want a heavier coverage and I must admit that I've warmed to it a lot. You only need a small amount otherwise it looks cakey and I find it looks best buffed into the skin using a dense kabuki-type brush. Instead of Skin Base, today I used a sample pot of the new Rouge Bunny Rouge Time Defying foundation.

I wanted to finish off with a few random brush thoughts. I used my MAC 217 to apply the Eyes to Kill eyeshadow, just as Lisa Eldrige demonstrates in her video. I was surprised how well the 217 applies this kind of product, I typically apply with my fingers but I've never been entirely happy with this. I will definitely use the 217 in future. I've been using my new Laura Mercier Eye Finishing brush to buff in concealer which it does really well, one of these days I will get round to using it with eyeshadows as I had intended.

Now this is probably a rather odd brush confession. I have been using my tiny Louise Young eyeliner brush to apply Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage concealer. I've hardly used the Secret Camouflage since I bought it two years ago, as I've always thought the formula looked too dry and obvious. After watching Lisa use it in her videos, I decided to give it a try using a small brush. Unfortunately, all of my concealer brushes are too big for this kind of spot application, hence the misuse of the liner brush. Using a different tool has definitely changed my opinion of Secret Camouflage and I intend to buy a dedicated pinpoint concealer brush to use with it in future.

  1. This look suits you so well - you look very pretty. I especially like that soft lipstick on you and much prefer it to the red from your Christmas MU post.
What do you think of this new RBR foundation? Is it any good?

    1. Thank you. It's really useful to see the two looks side by side like this as I would agree that this is the look I prefer of the two.

This is my very first use of the new RBR foundation so these are only my initial thoughts. It's got quite a dry satin finish and the coverage is lighter than I was expecting. I suspect it won't suits dry skin and will be better suited to oily to combination skin.

    2. Ah, interesting - thanks a lot. My skin can't decide at the moment whether it's dry or oily so I think buying it might be a bit risky. But it's true: your skin looks really perfect!

    3. Oh, and I completely forgot to tell you that I also love your new hairstyle and the fact that you let your grey show. So it's not just the make-up ;-)

    1. Thank you Lilly. I gave myself a mini-facial yesterday to try and fight the effects of the festive excesses!

    1. Thank you so much Mariella. The RBR foundation has that 'just-powdered' feel to it and it still feels that way several hours later. As a tinted moisturiser junkie, it feels strange but I find I keep stroking my skin :D

  4. Those colours look lovely on you. I also like your hair. The grey hairs make the style really interesting and textural.

    1. Thanks Claire. I often wonder whether people think I'm crazy for letting the grey show through but I do quite like the way it looks. I especially like the way it's coming through in my parting too!

  5. You look fab! I love the eyeshadow, it's surprisingly soft for such a strong eye look. I am very tempted my the LM secret camouflage.

    1. Ah, thanks Claire. I think the colour and finish of Pulp Fiction seems to soften the effect of using lots of black liner. I want to have a go doing to the same thing using Chanel Illusoire.

If you go for the LM secret camouflage, I would highly recommend getting a fine-point brush to apply it with.

  7. Irreverence looks lovely on you! :) I just got Prey of Lust and Nothing Unknown from Zuneta! Time to make (yet) another order LOL

    1. Thanks Jenni, Irreverence is an old favourite of mine. Oddly enough, I seem to recall Nothing Unknown was one I purchased and then parted with as it wasn't flattering on me. It was a shame as I love their texture.

  8. Very pretty, great combination of shades, I really like your brows :)
I don't think to use the 217 with products like that so will give that a go, I do tend to get stuck using the same tools so need to branch out a bit, I bought one of those beauty blender sponges recently and it has made such a difference to my makeup application, not sure why I didn't think of it earlier xx

    1. Thanks Replica. You know, the brow tinting was my surprise success of 2012!

You know, I've never tried a beauty blender, do you rate it? I've tried normal wedge sponges in the past but becoming frustrated at how much product they absorb. Maybe I ought to try again, even if it's just to use up all of foundations a bit faster ;) xx

    2. It does eat up product which is not good but I have to say the finish is better than any other wedge/sponge thing I have tried. I am going to buy more so I have one on hand every day as its my preferred method of application at the moment, seems to help fill in the pores which is always good xx

  9. Love this combination of colours on you and thank you so much for the tips on brushes. I'm always playing around, trying to find the perfect brush for the EtK shadows. For the longest while, I was using a lip brush, which seemed to work for more precise applications...

    1. Ooh, I really like the idea of using a lip brush with the EtK, I bet it gives a more intense application? I would not have used the 217 had it not been for Lisa Eldridge's video but I was really pleased with the effect (and not getting my fingers messy!).

  10. This is one kick-a** eye look Jane!!! Love it so much!!!
Btw I never would have thought of using a 217 for this type of eyeshadow consistency, I might give it a go!!!
Beautiful FOTD alltogether too btw! ;)

    1. Thank you so much Tina! I would definitely recommend trying the 217 brush with the hybrid cream to powder eyeshadows, it does work very well. One of these days, I will treat myself to another 217 so mine isn't constantly in need of washing! x
